Context

Approximately two years prior to the CWG, Six Degrees was approached by TfWM, looking for specialised Games transport and crowd movement planning and delivery.

What we did

We designed spectator transport hubs and venue transport plans across the Games environment, as well as operational delivery of developed plans during Games-time. We also applied a Games-time overlay plan onto the Regional Transport Coordination Centre, including bringing together the various stakeholders (rail, highways, bus and coach); co-located with B2022 Transport Operations Centre (TROC) to allow for collaboration.

Services Included:

  • Long-term consultancy support for CWG spectator planning; two long-term, full-time secondees co-located in TfWM offices undertaking spectator transport and crowd movement operations planning.
  • Provision of experienced event transport professionals to manage the operational delivery
  • Provision of senior experienced personnel to provide advisory support to the Gold leadership
  • Design of temporary spectator transport infrastructure across the Games environment
  • Development of the spectator transport command, control and coordination arrangements, including the design and development of the Regional Transport Coordination Centre (RTCC)
  • Operational delivery of the above aspects

“Special thanks to John, James, Ryan and the team at Six Degrees for their personal support on the successful transport operations for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. As usual, their experience and hard work across multiple venues, transport hubs and control rooms and particularly in the Regional Transport Control Room, gave invaluable support to the regional team, many of whom were experiencing their first truly international major event. Thanks for being there, sharing the load and enjoying the experience.”

Graham Jones,TfWM Director of Transport Operations

I’ve just witnessed what is surely the most efficient mass transit of people in Birmingham’s history. A stunningly successful operation is underway to take 30,000 away from Alexander Stadium. Gold medals needed for organisers and helpers.

Conclusion

Successful planning and delivery of operations. Movement of approximately 1.5 million people over the course of the Games.
