Context
The Venue Transport and Mobility Team (VTMT) played a critical role in ensuring that the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games ran seamlessly at two of the city’s most iconic locations – the Grand Palais and Pont Alexandre III.
Their overarching mission was clear: ensure Athletes, Games Family client groups and spectators, can travel to and from each venue safely and efficiently, whilst minimising the impact on residents and businesses.
Across both Games, the team coordinated the movements of over 900 athletes, more than 950 Olympic and Paralympic Family members, 4,000+ workforce, and 37,000 spectators – all within the heart of Paris.
The challenge was immense. The road networks surrounding both venues were never designed for the demands of a global event of this scale. The team had to rethink mobility, combining logistics expertise, urban sensitivity, and real-time coordination to keep the Games – and the city – moving in harmony.
What we did
- Developed and implemented the Venue Transport and Mobility Programme, ensuring full integration with all Functional Areas: Sport, Security, Management, Logistics, Protocol and Technology.
- Planned and managed all transport operations for Games Family client groups, workforce, and spectators at Grand Palais and Pont Alexandre III.
- Designed and operated dedicated road networks to manage Games-time mobility flows in dense city environments.
- Introduced temporary traffic management measures, physical infrastructure changes, and behavioural interventions to ensure safe and efficient access for all client groups.
- Coordinated arrival and departure services for athletes and officials, as well as workforce and spectator flows, across complex urban transport hubs.
- Worked hand in hand with local authorities and Paris 2024 Venue Management to balance Games operations with the day-to-day needs of residents and businesses.
- Applied the KISS principle (Keep It Simple and Straightforward) to all planning and delivery phases, enabling fast decision-making and smooth execution.
- Oversaw real-time monitoring and response operations to ensure vehicle and pedestrian movements remained efficient throughout the Olympic and Paralympic periods.
Through clear planning, collaboration, and adaptive management, the Venue Transport and Mobility Team delivered a world-class transport operation — ensuring precision, safety, and simplicity in one of the most complex environments of the Games.
